Top 5 EDC Items
Everyone has a set of everyday carry (EDC) items that are part of their daily routine. Whether you are like most Americans who’s EDC would be keys, wallet and cell phone; or the survivalist who’s EDC could consist of 100 different things. Some of us even have a different set of items we EDC depending on the situation; where we are going or what we are doing that day.
In this blog I’ll give you my top 5 EDC items you should always have. Now, I’m not going to include keys, wallet or cell phone because I’m going to assume you already have these on your person all the time. I’m also not going to include firearms in this list because some of you (A. may not want to carry or (B. may live in a location where you can’t carry. Now understand that firearms would be at the top of the list as I feel you should always have a means of self-protection (side note – you should also have proper training on your weapon and know the laws in your state for carrying). So let’s get into the list.
- Knife
A good knife should always be on your person, it’s doesn’t have to be a giant machete. In fact, I prefer a good solid folder as your EDC. There are many options of blades you can go with. You could go with a classic like the Buck 110. Most of us had a Father or Grandfather that carried this blade. It’s a solid knife, great construction that has stood the test of time. The only downside is it doesn’t have a pocket clip. The Kershaw Brawler is a stupid good deal on amazon right now (March 7th, 2019); it is also the blade I carry most frequently and is currently recommended on my Amazon page. The truth is there is a ton of great blades on the market at all different price points, so it comes down to personal preference.
- Light
With the advances in technology everyday carrying a light is easier than ever. Lights are being made smaller and brighter all the time. This makes fitting them in your pocket easier and with 100 plus lumens on some it makes it worth carrying. Two great options I like are the Streamlight stylus pro and the Olight S1R ii Baton. These lights very in style, lumens and price. The Streamlight is 100 lumens and comes in at just under $20, while the more expensive Olight at $65 is 1000 lumens. These are two reputable companies that put out high quality light so you can’t go wrong with either.
- Lighter
If you read my 5 C’s blog you know that a combustion device is a must have. And you also know that I recommended the forever match and the match pro lighter. Both of these are great compact items for your keychain, but carrying a Bic or Zippo lighter in your pocket is a great idea also. The nice thing about the Zippo lighter is the fact that they are windproof and refillable. The downside is they are larger and more expensive than a Bic. Either of these are a great option for your EDC.
- Pen and Notepad
Now most of us today rely on our cell phones for keeping notes, but an old fashion pen and paper can come in handy more than you may think. Using a pen and pad can sometimes be faster for quick note taking than your phone or other device. You can use it for leaving a note behind for someone, or if you need to exchange information. If you spend a little extra money and get yourself a nice tactical pen, it could also be used in self-defense. I also recommend using Rite in Rain notebooks. While they are more expensive than a standard notebook, they do allow you to write in the rain as their name implies.
- Cash
You know what they say, Cash is King; but there are an alarming number of people who never carry any cash now days. I should know, I used to be one of them. But through my journey to preparedness (see what I did there) I have learned just how essential having cash on hand really is. To be honest, life is just easier if you have cash. Even when I didn’t carry cash I was always going to the bank or ATM to pull some out. So why not have it on hand and make things simpler. Having cash on hand in a variety of denominations allows you to be able to do things like tip people. This allows them to be free of the credit card receipt of your tip. You can also use cash as a bargaining tool to maybe get a better price. Even in the modern age we live in not all places accept cards. If you are traveling to rural areas you will find places that are cash only. Most of us have been to the store at a time when the card readers are down for whatever reason. Having cash on you would allow you to still make your purchase. Little tip for you; always keep $20 in your cell phone case for emergencies. I guarantee you that at some point in time you will need it and you will thank me. Just be sure to it replace as soon as possible after use.
Now this list of 5 is just the beginning. There are so many more items you can incorporate into your everyday carry. Take some time and think about your individual needs. Maybe you want a small IFAK (individual first-aid kit) or Paracord. Tailor your EDC to you, don’t just take my list or someone else’s list and copy it. Make sure it works for you.
Peace, Love & all the Above,
Bear.
